If you follow any other points and miles accounts on social media, you have probably heard the “buzz” about the changes coming to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. Whether or not you have heard about the updates, we wanted to break everything down for you and clarify everything.
On June 15, 2026 our favorite starter card will be getting the following updates:
The Good: New Bonus Categories and Benefits/Perks!
- 3X on gas and EV charging (LOVE this)-currently you just earn 1x
- 3x points on vacation home rentals at Airbnb, Vrbo, Plum Guide, HomeAway, Homestay.com, and Vacasa (another new great way to maximize!)
- $100 hotel credit through the bank portal each anniversary year (currently $50)
- $120 credit toward Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS every four years (Loving this as well!)
- One year of complimentary Apple TV when activated by December 31, 2026
- Even more travel protections
The Not so Good: Transfer Ratio Changes etc.
- The ratio to transfer points to Hyatt will be changing. The ratio will move from 1:1 to 4:3 ratio. Currently if you transfer 1,000 points from this card to World of Hyatt you would get 1,000 Hyatt points. With the new transfer ratio, if you transfer 1,000 points, you would get just 750 points.
- The 10% anniversary bonus is also going away. This isn’t a huge impact for most, because you only earn 1K points for every $10,000 you put on the card. But, still something to take note of.
Timelines and Recommendations
- If you currently hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card these ratio changes won’t impact you until October 1, 20206. So, if you can, move your points to book your Hyatt stays before this date.
- If you hold the business version of this card, you also have until October 1, 2026 before these changes begin for you.
- For anyone that applies for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card on or after June 15, 2026, changes take place immediately.
Premium Card Advantage
- These changes can make grabbing the premium version of this card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card even more valuable. The Hyatt transfer ratios will be staying the same with a 1:1 transfer ratio!
What are we personally doing?
- The plan for us is to have one of each in our household! We are loving the new credits, benefits, and elevated bonus of the premium card. But, we also love some of the new bonus categories and perks of our favorite starter card.
- Remember you can hold BOTH of these cards…or if you have a player 2, one of you could grab the premium version and the other can hold our favorite starter card.
- Together, these cards could really be a great combo for your points and miles strategy!
